What are enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions by providing an alternative pathway with lower activation energy and thus speed up the rate of a particular reaction. The enzymes that are not consumed at the end of the reaction can be reused. However, enzymes are specific as to which reaction to catalyze. This is because each enzyme has a special geometry and this geometry can only fit a complementary substrate (starting material) in a reaction.
Applications:
i)
Industrial cleaning and degreasing
EnzymeKleen is a cocktail of enzymes in a nutrient-rich solution. This product supplied in liquid form, can be applied in grease sumps/grease traps to break down tough grease and fats and also to break down organic wastes, which contributes to the bad odor. When poured into grease sumps, the nutrient rich solution acts as a food source for the existing bacteria population. In ideal conditions, bacteria multiply in number every 20-30 minutes. So with more food sources available, the bacteria will multiply even faster. Once the food source from EnzymeKleen has been exhausted, the bacteria population will then turn to other food sources available from the organic wastes around them. The enzymes are the ones that make organic wastes readily available as food sources for the bacteria.
The enzymes in the solution, once in the grease sumps/grease traps will begin working by breaking down grease. Lipase (enzyme that breaks down fats/oils) will start working on the fats and oils available in abundant in the grease sumps/grease traps. Lipase breaks down complex fat molecules into simpler, water-soluble substrate (organic acids), making it easier for the bacteria to take up as food. Therefore, the amount of grease will be greatly reduced in a short time, as more and more bacteria are available every time the bacteria population multiplies. Besides that, the biodegradable surfactant (cleaning agent) in EnzymeKleen, will help wash the digested grease by emulsification process, just like cleaning of grease by conventional cleaner.

Waste water treatment
EnzymeKleen can be used to treat biological waste in bioreactors for waste water treatment. As a nutrient rich solution, EnzymeKleen can act as a very good food source for existing bacteria population, to help them multiply in numbers faster than usual. Besides that, enzymes, depending on the type of waste present, will digest organic wastes present in the bioreactor into simpler substances, which can be taken up as food by the bacteria. By using EnzymeKleen, the use of chemical treatment can be avoided. Most importantly, EnzymeKleen is a pool of enzymes which are degradable after about two weeks.
Dosage:
Initial applications of EnzymeKleen should be at a higher dosage rate to provide a shock treatment. This is to increase bacteria population rapidly. Once stimulated, the bacteria will only require small dosages to top up to the activity.
